Then, from the ‘heroic’ period of 1805-1810, there are the five central quartets - the three ‘Razumowsky’ quartets, Op. 59, and Op. 74 and 95 - in which Beethoven shatters the formal traditions of the genre by taking new steps in terms of individualisation and intensification of his language.
